Land Rover LRX concept unveiled ahead of Detroit debut

Bold evolution of Land Rover design – but still unmistakably a Land Rover

A desirable, premium and more compact 4x4 which extends the definition of ‘breadth of capability’

Demonstrates Land Rover’s seriousness about continued relevance and sustainability – with new technologies, lightweight design and environmentally-responsible materials

Public debut at NAIAS (Detroit Show) in January, to start gauging customer reaction

Land Rover unveils a vision of its future at the NAIAS (Detroit Show) in January 2008, with the world debut of the LRX concept – a bold evolution of Land Rover design that signals the brand’s shift into new areas of the market, while remaining true to its core values. As the company prepares to celebrate its 60th anniversary during 2008, the three-door LRX, with its more compact size, lighter weight and sustainability-focused technologies, clearly addresses the needs of a changing world.

“The LRX concept delivers the powerful message that we are as serious about sustainability as we are confident about the continuing relevance and desirability of our vehicles,” says Phil Popham, Land Rover’s managing director. “LRX is in every respect a Land Rover, but it’s a very different Land Rover.

“LRX has unmistakable Land Rover design and the breadth of capability that you’d expect from our vehicles. But it carries those essentials into a segment where the brand has never been before, and with a proposed level of efficiency that would make it one of the cleanest vehicles in its class. It is Land Rover’s way of affirming the brand’s responsible approach to future product development. At this stage, LRX is purely a concept, designed to help us develop our thinking as well as gauge customer reaction – but this feels like a hugely exciting direction to take.”

Compact and premium:

LRX is described as a cross-coupé and dramatically extends the scope of what Land Rover represents. Though smaller than the Freelander 2/LR2, LRX was conceived as a premium car, designed to appeal to new customers in the luxury and executive sector – those who want many of the benefits of a 4x4 and the presence of a larger vehicle, but in a more compact package.

The first all-new Land Rover revealed since Gerry McGovern became the company’s design director, LRX is a natural extension of the Land Rover range, complementing the existing models and helping to define a new segment. Its many recognisable Land Rover design cues include bold new interpretations of the signature clamshell bonnet, the floating roof and the solid ‘wheel-at-each-corner’ stance.

“LRX is a design born out of passion for the brand, but it is different, relevant, engaging and exciting – because Land Rover has never built ordinary cars,” says Gerry McGovern. “LRX has a highly desirable identity and the design alludes strongly to its capability, while clearly underlining our forward-looking philosophy – it’s a Land Rover that would be comfortable on Bond Street or Fifth Avenue, but wouldn’t flinch at getting its wheels dirty.”

Its compact size is one of its greatest assets, which will appeal to anyone who wants the versatile ability of an agile 4x4 with the cachet of the Land Rover name. In addition, its lower weight and the reduced aerodynamic drag resulting from the smaller frontal area give significant gains in fuel efficiency and reduced CO2 emissions.

The LRX concept also adopts intelligent power management systems and other technologies first shown by Land Rover in the Land_e concept in 2006. Further details of LRX’s powertrain and sustainability technologies will be released at the Detroit Show.

Extending ‘breadth of capability’:

The positioning of LRX could be described as moving subtly from traditional SUV to crossover, with its more car-like appearance and dynamics that are sportier and on-road biased. But while its character is underlined by excellent agility, handling and performance, LRX also promises the widest breadth of capability in the class. To help achieve this, it has full-time four-wheel drive and Hill Descent Control, as well as a special version of Land Rover’s acclaimed Terrain Response system, to optimise traction on difficult surfaces ranging from icy roads to wet grass, gravel and snow. But to reflect LRX’s on-road bias, Terrain Response also gains a new ‘Eco’ mode for lower emissions during urban driving.

The design of LRX was developed entirely in-house, driven by a passion to create a car that truly represents Land Rover’s future thinking. It has a very dynamic profile, with a distinctive taper to the floating roofline and a muscular shoulder running the length of the car, accentuated by the rising beltline. The glazing wraps right around LRX, with no exposed pillars, creating a bold design graphic. The architectural structure of the upper body can be glimpsed through the windows and roof – echoing some of the best contemporary buildings.

Pushing the wheels out to the four corners helps give the car its purposeful stance, and its front-end design makes a powerful and instantly recognisable statement of Land Rover’s identity. There are new interpretations of Land Rover’s traditional clamshell bonnet, distinctive headlamps, jewel-like, tapering blade indicator clusters front and rear, and subtle side vents. LRX’s wheelarches are wide but softly integrated, housing 20-inch alloy wheels.

The carefully sculpted corners dramatically reduce the car’s visual overhangs front and rear. With its perforated two-bar grille, door releases concealed in the car’s shoulders and graphic details ‘punched out’ of the smooth body surfaces rather than overlaid on them, LRX is beautifully proportioned and elegantly simple – but very dramatic and distinctive.

Impeccable, premium interior:

The interior of the LRX concept clearly demonstrates how a compact Land Rover can still be roomy, practical, versatile – and sophisticated. The impeccably executed cabin features a combination of soft leathers in rich tan and dark chocolate, with polished aluminium details.

The ‘fast’ sloping architecture of the centre console reflects LRX’s sporty dynamics, as does the distinctive binnacle over the instrument cluster. The electronic display uses ‘floating’ LCD graphics to create a three-dimensional look that can be personalised for different drivers, as well as interacting with LRX’s touch-screen display.

The instrument graphics present data in layers depending on their level of importance, to give maximum relevant information with minimum distraction. When appropriate, displayed information transfers between the main instrument cluster and the touch screen. Further adding to LRX’s involving personality, the different drivetrain modes are matched by changes in the cabin’s background lighting colour – green in economy, red in sports and blue in standard mode.

Clever use of space:

Although LRX is compact, clever use of space makes it impressively roomy, and many neat design touches maximise its practicality. A second touch-screen area gives a fully interactive display and control for LRX’s iPhone docking facility. On either side of the horizontally-split, power-operated tailgate, removable and power-adjustable speakers include an iPod docking station. There is also a coolbox, plus a bottle chiller that can be clipped to the lowered tailgate. This also has integral aluminium cupholders between two padded seating areas, for a new twist on the idea of a traditional Land Rover tailgate lunch.

Every interior design detail combines to maximise both actual space and the feeling of space. The clear roof is supported by a ‘spider’ frame running into the A-pillars, and the rear quarter pillars have glazed apertures for improved visibility and a lighter feel in the cabin.

LRX’s distinctive seats ‘float’ on individual plinths and have open frameworks to reinforce the impression of light, airy interior space – while also creating useful under-seat and under-floor stowage areas. The clever, powered mechanism of the seat backs maximises interior flexibility and helps create a large, flat storage area when needed, complete with multiple tie-down options. The generous load space and through-loading option also help accommodate bikes, skis or surfboards.

“Flexible load-carrying capacity is fundamental to the concept of LRX,” says Gerry McGovern. “With this car, we’ve interpreted the idea of Land Rover ‘breadth of capability’ to be more about versatility and on-road dynamics than about ultimate off-roading. This meets the needs of the new customers that we believe would be attracted by this type of car; they will not only appreciate LRX’s flexibility, but will also recognise that it has been packaged with the highest levels of precision.”

Sustainable product design:

The structures of the seats and instrument panel are elegant enough to be left exposed – one novel approach that Land Rover’s designers have taken to reduce vehicle weight. Another example is replacing the glass for the side windows and roof with polycarbonate, which is around 40% lighter.

Even the choice of premium-quality trim materials reflects Land Rover’s deep thinking about sustainability, with vegetable-tanned leather (chromium-free, so better for recycling), extensive use of aluminium (both lightweight and readily recyclable) and carpeting made of felt from sustainable sources. And the luxurious, vanilla-coloured ‘fine suede’ on the door inserts and headliner is a 100% recycled material made from used plastic bottles.

“We are determined to make sustainability a key element in our future product design and the way we do business, while still creating vehicles that have a strong emotional appeal as well as fulfilling people’s practical needs,” says Phil Popham. “No single technology delivers all the answers to whole-life sustainability, but the LRX concept brings together some of the ideas for the future that interest us, integrating them into a car that we believe represents an exciting way forward for Land Rover.”

Opel Agila pricing announced (DE)

Featuring high practicality at an affordable price, the new Agila can now be ordered from 9,990 euros and will be available at dealerships from spring 2008 in Germany. The new Opel mini monocab offers plenty of feel-good space for family and friends, as well as up to 1050 litres of cargo capacity despite the car’s compact exterior length of 3.74 metres. The new Agila is the youngest member of the highly successful Opel monocab family. A monocab is distinguishable by its hood line that flows without a visible break into the combined passenger and luggage compartment. Thanks to this design and clever innovative details, the fully fledged five-door, five-seat mini monocab can set standards in space economy and variability – just like the small Meriva and compact Zafira monocab have already done. The Meriva has been the top-selling small monocab in Europe since its launch in 2003, and leads the overall monocab segment together with the Zafira. The new Agila is not only very affordable, but also boasts low fuel consumption and emissions: the Agila 1.0 with 48 kW/65 hp requires an average of five litres of petrol per 100 km, while the 1.3 CDTI with 55 kW/75 hp and diesel particulate filter as standard consumes just 4.5 litres of diesel per 100 km. Both variants produce just 120 g CO2/km.

The entry-level Agila comes with a wide range of standard safety equipment. For less than 10,000 euros, customers get ABS, front and side airbags for both front passengers and ISOFIX child seat mountings. Also on board ex works is speed-dependant power steering, height-adjustable front seats, rear window wiper with interval control and power tailgate with touchpad. Customers who order the new Agila ahead of its official market launch in early April 2008 will receive a Styling package from Opel as a bonus with their new car.

Move out of the way gold, Platinum is coming through for Toyota Aygo (UK)

There is no more exclusive Aygo than the new Platinum, a version of Toyota’s award-winning city car that is brimful of premium quality features. But while the specification is high, the price tag marks the model down as an ideal New Year bargain.

On sale from January, Aygo Platinum benefits from £1,555-worth of additional equipment beyond the range-topping Aygo+, yet the price premium is just an extra £550. No maths degree is required to work out that that’s a deal worth more than £1,000 for every customer.

Luxurious features provided as standard include Alcantara and leather upholstery, leather trim for the steering wheel and gear knob and 14-inch Turbine alloy wheels with locking nuts. There is also Crystal Silver metallic paint – now exclusive to the Platinum model.

These items are in addition to the regular Aygo+ specification, which includes six airbags, electric front windows, tilt-adjusting steering column, remote central locking, removable rear parcels shelf, six-speaker sound system with CD player and AUX-in socket for connecting portable audio equipment, 50:50 split-folding rear seats and body colour-matched door handles.

Aygo Platinum is available in both three and five-door body styles, powered by Toyota’s ultra-fuel efficient 1.0 VVT-i petrol engine, which gives an official 61.4mpg in combined cycle driving. CO2 emissions of 109g/km mean that Aygo Platinum costs owners just £35 a year in Vehicle Excise Duty. A five-speed manual gearbox is standard, but optional MultiMode clutchless transmission can be selected, in conjunction with optional air conditioning.

On-the-road prices are £7,995 for the three-door model and £8,245 for the five-door.

Renault Laguna Coupé caught cold

At the recent Frankfurt Motor Show, Renault debuted the cool-looking Laguna Coupé concept to friendly press corps and now here are the first photos of the upcoming production model caught testing in Northern Sweden.

Although its difficult to see through the unusual thick disguise, the overall styling of this prototype compared to the concept car, looks quite toned down and not as sporty. With smaller wheel openings, longer quarter panels and a rear roof showing less slope. It seems Renault is putting greater prominence on rear passenger space and cargo capacity, similar to the Mercedes CLS-Class and Jaguar XF instead of an hard-line sport coupé.

In addition to the existing selection of engines for the Laguna, the coupe could also be available with a new V6 dCi 3.0 litre engine delivering between 230 and 250 HP which will find its way under the Infiniti FX and G-Series sedan. It could even find its way under the EX Series.

Expected to enter the European market in 2009, the new Laguna Coupé faces strong competitors such as the Peugeot 407 Coupé and the upcoming Citroen C5 Coupé.

Nissan Qashqai 100,000 milestone

Nissan’s compact crossover has proven a hit in Europe as the 100,000th customer sale was finished during the last week of November. The Qashqai was launched in the European market in March and according to Nissan’s stats, the UK, Russia and Italy were its three largest markets, with sales at the end of November of 17,554, 15,376 and 10,746 units respectively since launch.

In order to meet demand for the car in Europe, Nissan increased production by 20% in June at its factory in Sunderland, England and from January, production of the Japanese version of the Qashqai (Dualis) will be transferred from Sunderland to Nissan’s factory in Kyushu, Japan, thus allowing extra production capacity for Europe. Sales of Dualis in Japan as it is badged in that market, have also exceeded expectation with total sales of over 18,000 since its introduction in May.

Nissan Qashqai facts & figures:

On average, 850 QASHQAIs are built a day at Sunderland
Each QASHQAI receives 4608 spot-welds in construction, administered by 298 robots
920 different combinations of QASHQAI have been manufactured
It takes 10.5 man hours to build a QASHQAI (including bumper mouldings and painting, and axle production)
A QASHQAI contains approximately 2750 components (depending on specification)

Waiting lists for exotic cars

I'm quite surprised to actually see waiting lists on cars that have a value of £100,000 or more excluding the Honda Civic. Anywho, some of these desirable cars have long waiting lists or have been sold out.

Concept Car: Suzuki Concept A-Star

Most of the world’s motor industry is spending December gearing up for the Detroit motor show; not Suzuki. One of its largest unveilings of 2008 will have already been revealed by the time the doors of Detroit’s Cobo centre open on January 19. Suzuki’s debutant will be this – the Suzuki Concept A-Star which was staged at the New Delhi motorshow on the 9th.

The Concept A-Star has been designed to provide a sneak peak at Suzuki’s fifth ‘world strategic model’. The production car it previews will follow the Swift, Grand Vitara, SX4 and Splash as a car built for the global market. And, says Suzuki, that car will be a five-door A-segment hatchback with a frugal 1.0-litre petrol engine that will be marketed mainly in Europe. In other words, we are about to see the return of the Suzuki Alto.

Judging by these pictures, it should be a better-looking Alto too. The Concept A-Star has a rising belt line, flared wheelarches, some attractive surface language and an expressive ‘face’. Expect the finished thing to be slightly calmer-looking but it should share the same primary features, proportions and stance, which is great news for Suzuki.

Suzuki’s new city car will be built in India by the Japanese firm’s Indian subsidiary Maruti, just like the last Alto. It will go into production in October 2008, so expect the finished road car to be shown at next autumn’s Paris salon d’automobile and to go on sale in the UK before the end of next year, priced from around £6500.

Vauxhall recalls over 350,000 vehicles (UK)

If you own a previous generation Corsa that was built between 2004 and 2006, Combo van or Tigra built between 2004 and 2008, you will be hearing from Vauxhall shortly.

A recall of 355,000 vehicles is being carried out to replace the ABS control unit and cover assembly for the old Corsa and its derivatives, after it was revealed that there could be a risk of fire.

Things get even more embarrassing for Vauxhall, as the risk is a result of modifications carried out to the engine wiring harness following a previous recall of the same models.

The risk is very low but with numbers so high, Vauxhall ask that customers wait until they get a recall letter before contacting a dealership.

It should also be highlighted that the latest Corsa model is unaffected.

Mini Clubman sold out (UK)

The Mini Clubman has sold out in its first month of sales with more than 3,000 orders taken from the UK.

Last month, Mini saw a record 4,104 Minis sold which was the third highest month for the iconic car.

For those who want a new Mini Clubman will face up to a three month waiting list.

A Mini spokesperson said: “With the first Mini, we had loads of pre-production orders but with the new Clubman, it’s a little strange”.

“People like it, but only get interested once they’ve seen it in the flesh.”

The new Mini Clubman was launched last month to significant compliments, rejuvenating the model from the 1970s.

Mini confirmed new customers would face a delivery time “in the early part of next year – possibly February.”

BMW is looking to roll out 260,000 Minis in 2008 – a quarter of which are expected to be Clubmans.

All three UK plants – Oxford, Swindon and Hams Hall are at full capacity but, the rumoured Mini SAV is set to be built in Magna Steyr, Austria.

Suicide doors for '09 Meriva

Suicide doors? The last time Vauxhall/Opel gave suicide doors to their car was back in 1953 on the Opel Kaptain. Spy photographers stumbled across a Meriva mule in a public car park in Germany. Just like the previous Mervia prototypes, the rear side doors had heavy camouflage on on it. Due to the vehicle being parked, spies peeked through the rear windscreen and managed to snap some photos of the interior. The prototypes have no rear seats so it was easy to make out the new windowline and see the rear doors hinged backwards.

We don't expect to see the tail-lights located on the c-pillar anymore as this itself will be much thinner compared to the outgoing model.

If the Meriva does turn out to have suicide doors, it will be the first vehicle in its class to offer this.

We will see the next Meriva sometime in 2009.

Chevrolet gets hot down-under

After weeks of hype surrounding the Camaro, we finally get some decent pictures of a pre-production mule.

Caught testing just outside of Melbourne, Australia, a group of Camaro prototypes were accompanied by some Ford Mustang's.

The Camaro is set to go on sale early 2009 followed by the Camaro convertible in mid 2009.

Peugeot 207 SW Outdoor pricing announced (UK)

Peugeot’s 207 SW range gets a new brother this month in the shape of this new flagship Outdoor version of its junior estate.

Planned as the most desirable 207 SW, this car gets a full length glass roof and suspension raised by 16mm at the front axle and 21mm at the rear. Peugeot’s 4x4 makeover doesn’t run to four-wheel drive but does include grey plastic wheelarch and sill extensions that now seem compulsory for any faux-4x4.

Inside, the 207 Outdoor got electric windows all round, tinted side glass, washable floor mats and black or brown upholstery and trim.

The Peugeot 207 SW Outdoor comes with a choice of 1.6-litre petrol or diesel power and is priced from £13,650. It’s designed to go head-to-head with the Skoda Fabia Scout which hits the market next year.

Cadillac CTS arrives in Australia (AU)

GM is bending over backwards to gain more ground outside of the USA resulting in substantial sales increase in Europe, Asia Pacific region, Latin America, Africa, East Europe and Australia is its next target. While GM's Holden division is starting to export Pontiac G8's of various kinds to the US, Cadillac is in turn preparing its new CTS sedan for an Australian debut in the fourth quarter of 2008.

Jim Taylor, Cadillac general manager said: “We’re confident that this CTS will meet the discriminating tastes and demands of luxury customers, no matter where they live.” The car has definitely won the hearts of Motor Trend who awarded the car with their popular COTY award.

The Australian Cadillac CTS will be powered by a 3.6-litre VVT direct injection Global V6 engine, generating 227kW / 304 hp and 370Nm of torque. A 2.9 litre diesel is rumoured but GM hasn’t mentioned it yet.

GM Holden Chairman and Managing Director Chris Gubbey said: “Cadillac is undergoing a brand renaissance and global expansion driven by dramatic design and technical innovation. With cutting edge design, serious performance and luxury appointments, Cadillac will appeal to Australian prestige car buyers and quickly establish itself in a segment traditionally dominated by European brands.”

Vauxhall Agila pricing announced (UK)

Vauxhall's new Agila will go on sale next April in the UK with a starting price of £7,595.

The Agila city car comes with five doors as standard and enters the range below the larger Corsa.

The petrol engines range from a 1.0-litre, 64bhp three-cylinder unit or a 1.2-litre, 84bhp which will come with an automatic transmission as an option.

Only one diesel engine will be offered in the form of the 1.3-litre CDTi 74bhp unit.

There's plenty of reason to buy the Agila, including annual road tax of only £35 and 120g/km C02 on the entry level models, cute looks and luggage space to equal the Corsa.

The larger Corsa has a very broad target market, whereas the Agila is specifically aimed at city-dwellers who rarely venture past the local shops.

That's not the only homegrown competition the Agila faces. The Suzuki Splash city car arrives just before the Agila at a lower price for exactly the same car.

Suzuki hasn't announced prices for the Splash and Vauxhall won't release any more detailed pricing quite yet, so we'll have to wait until next year to find out just how close the competition really is.

Volkswagen Up! to be built in India

Volkswagen has given away its future model plans for India, including a wide range of models, from an all-new small car that's still on the drawing board to the super-luxurious Phaeton.

The German carmaker is deadly serious about its venture into the market, which it kicked off in November with the launch of the Passat. In the next five years, a slew of models could see VW producing as many as 240,000 units a year in this market by 2012.

Key to VW's India plans are to mass-market models that will be produced in large volumes in the company's upcoming factory in Chakan. The first is the sixth-generation Polo (A06) hatchback that is under development and is expected in 2009. The Polo will be positioned in the hatchback segment alongside the Skoda Fabia and Honda Jazz. A sedan version of the Polo is also a possibility that would put it smack into Honda City and Suzuki SX4 territory.

The bigger-selling model will be an all-new small car based on the Up! microcar concept that VW revealed in September at the Frankfurt motor show. VW will build a four-door hatchback off this new platform (code named MHB) which, like the Tata super-low-priced car, follows a rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout. Dubbed the A000 in VW's platform hierarchy, the new microcar will be built in three different markets of the world from 2010. Production of the new microcar in India could begin by 2011. With a length of only 134 inches, the microcar is shorter than a Suzuki Alto, but a longer wheelbase is under development.

According to the industry rumour mill, VW has set an aggressive price target of under $7,500, but a lot depends on the level of localization and cost management of the program. VW has been in talks with Indian companies including Bajaj Auto to help develop the car.

The next-generation Jetta, which will be spun off the future Golf platform (A6), is expected in India sometime in 2009 soon after its global launch. This three-box sedan will compete with the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla and Skoda Octavia.

All the new Volkswagens will come with state-of-the-art direct-injection petrol engines with a new range of common-rail diesel engines still under development.

Toyota Sequoia pricing announced (U.S)

Toyota announced that it has increased the price on its base 2008 Sequoia SUV by $990 over the outgoing model. The 2008 Sequoia will start at $34,835, including a $685 destination charge, when it goes on sale in late December.

The flagship 2008 Toyota Sequoia Platinum 4x4 model carries a Lexus like price tag of $56,285, including shipping. Toyota did not offer a Sequoia Platinum model in 2007. The range topping model last year was the Sequoia Limited 4x4, which started at $46,345, including shipping. For 2008, the Sequoia Limited grade with the standard 5.7-litre V8 starts at $45,910 for the 4x2 model.

The Platinum model includes deluxe items like 20-inch diamond-cut-finish aluminum wheels, rear load-leveling air suspension, a power front seat memory package, heated and air-conditioned ventilated front seats, heated second-row seats, a power rear door, a tilt and slide sunroof, headlamp cleaners and a navigation system with a back-up camera.

Renault Sandero launches in Brazil (Brazil)

Renault has launched the new Renault Sandero in Brazil, and is readying itself for a February move into Argentina. Later in 2008, Dacia will also start building the car for the European market and the Maghreb (north west Africa). In 2009, South Africa can welcome the Renault Sandero too, more markets are currently under review by the Renault board.

The Renault Sandero is a 'roomy and robust top-end compact car' according to Renault. The Sandero shares its platform (B0 platform) with the Dacia/Renault Logan which took Europe by storm (worldwide sales of Logan MCV and Van have totalled at 700,000 in just three years), selling out in most countries.

The Renault Sandero has been co-developed by the Brazilian RTA (Renault Technologies Americas) since 2005 and the early prototypes were built and tested in Brazil. With all the Brazilian expertise on flex-fuel engines, Renault developed a flex-fuel version of the 1.6 litre 8V engine which complements the engine range (1.0 litre 16V and 1.6 litre 16V).

If the price is right, we can see this car conquer some hearts.

Citroen C4 Notchback confirmed for Europe

We previously reported that Citroen might bring the C4 Notchback into Europe. After our spy photographers sighted a black Citroen sedan testing in France, it seemed almost certain and now it is. Ever since mid-2006, the C4 Triomphe has been on sale in China and since mid-2007 the C4 Pallas has been on sale in the South American Mercosur region (Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay).

Plans were to sell the C4-Triomphe overseas in Europe to offer an substitute to the ever-popular C4 hatchback, but today word came that this plan has been deferred due to high demand in South America. Over 10,000 units have been sold to date (production started in April) and export is now planned for mid-2008, allowing PSA to increase capacity at their Palomar plant in Argentina.

Vincent Rambaud, head of PSA's South American operations, said: “The Pallas is selling well because it is the first non-European PSA car adapted to meet the needs of car buyers in the Mercosur region. It is an example of how we will increase sales in Mercosur by developing new cars adapted to the local market.”
